HOW LONG SHOULD I WAIT BEFORE UPGRADING MY EQUIPMENT?
Golfers typically replace their drivers every 4-5 years; irons need to be replaced a little less frequently. Fairway woods and hybrids tend to stay in play for longer periods of time. Wedges should be replaced every 1-3 years; but they’re probably not. Studies have shown that a typical wedge will last 65-75 rounds before there's a dip in performance and that number decreases the more you hit balls on the driving range. As for putters, some golfers have one putter, while others have many putters. So it's up to you.
Mr. Topes's advice is to wait two generations before purchasing most golf clubs.
Lots of clubs are on one-year cycles but significant R&D typically takes longer. Often, the second model in a series is not much different than the first, and is almost never different enough to justify dropping another $500 for a driver or $220 for a fairway wood and/or hybrid.
Irons typically have longer cycles. Two years is not uncommon, so it often takes four years to get through two generations. So you could wait every 5-6 years to replace your irons.
In regards to wedges, you should replace them more often than you do. CLICK HERE to see our wedge inventory.
